In August of 2004, my brother, Aaron Thomas Sain, lost his 8-year battle with Chordoma cancer. He was 18 and had just graduated from High School. My family was devastated but driven to do what we could to save others from the same illness. Shortly after Aaron passed away, my mother started serving on the board for the Brain Tumor Fund for the Carolinas.
Hunter Dyer, Aaron’s chief doctor, was also a part of the organization and it was through him that our family was introduced to 24 Hours of Booty. 24 Hours of Booty is a 24 hour cycling charity to raise money for cancer.
After signing up for Booty, I talked my parents into letting me get a road bike. I was instantly hooked on all aspects of cycling. I loved the speed, effort, cornering, and climbing. I loved being able to explore the roads around my home and most of all it gave me quiet time away from a very busy life.
Our very first 24 Hours of Booty event was in July of 2005. The slogan for that year was BEGIN. I remember the t-shirt for that year had a circle that looped this saying; “Begin the loop with confidence, but with each passing hour you must ask yourself, if you can ”BEGIN." I rode a total of 80 miles and although I was exhausted it was a wonderful experience. For my fundraising efforts I was awarded a Giordana Jersey, my first of many!
The cycling community gave me so much at a time when I needed it the most. Not only did I gain passion for cycling but I have also made life long friends. By riding and working in the industry I am able to pour into people, giving them the same great experiences I’ve had.
I think that is exactly why I like the Giordana brand. Giordana has generously supported the cycling scene I grew up in. Giordana’s impact around the world is evident. My college team wears and is supported by Giordana. My club team wears Giordana, and because of the quality of the people and product I will stick with Giordana cycling apparel for life.
In the last year I have been lucky enough to wear a wide range of Giordana apparel and the entire collection is impressive. It's difficult to have a favorite kit, but nothing can beat the latest FR-C. To match my new black and bright yellow fluo Pinarello Dogma F8, I had to get the FR-C jersey and bib shorts in fluo yellow. I love the attention to detail and the vibrant color.
Even though I have been totally sucked into cycling for all of its action and grandeur, at the end of the day I do not forget how I came to love the sport. Every July my friends and family “Do It For Aaron” at 24 Hours of Booty. To BEGIN once again.
*Brian Sain, his family and friends ride each year in memory of Aaron and for the continued research and development made possible by the 24 Hours of Booty event.
